Interruption of railway traffic on the Sarajevo-Čapljina-Sarajevo route due to the natural disaster

Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina inform the public that, due to the natural disaster that affected most of Bosnia and Herzegovina on 3 and 4 October 2024, there were serious damages to the railway and railway facilities on the section Ostrožac-Grabovica in a length of 17 km, as a consequence of which all passenger and freight transport was suspended on the Sarajevo-Čapljina-Sarajevo railway line.

ŽFBH expert teams are on the ground and are determining the extent of damage to the railway infrastructure. The most critical place is in the area of Donja Jablanica, the locality of Komadinovo vrelo, where rainwater triggered a huge landslide that completely destroyed several culverts, and the 200-meter-long railway remained hanging in air.

Given the degree of devastation, even with all the activated manpower and machinery, ŽFBH cannot solve this problem on its own, and therefore they informed the FBiH Government and the Federal Ministry of Transport about the issue.

In today’s conversation, the support of the FBiH Government Office and the line ministry regarding urgent action and support for the ŽFBH was highlighted in order to eliminate the consequences of the natural disaster and to establish the normalisation of railway traffic on this section as soon as possible. The damage assessment and solution proposals will be given by competent professional services and joint commissions.

FBiH Railways appeal to its customers and passengers to find alternative solutions for the transport of goods and passengers on this section, until major damage to the railway infrastructure is repaired.
